500 Learners. 50kg of Litter. One Powerful Programme.
We’re proud to have partnered with Oceans Research and Mossel Bay Municipality to deliver this impactful environmental education programme, and we’re already looking ahead to 2026.
Together, we’re shaping the next generation of ocean heroes
Over the past few months, Earth Legacy Foundation has proudly partnered with Captain Fanplastic, Oceans Research, and Mossel Bay Municipality to deliver a dynamic environmental education programme to local schools across Mossel Bay.
The Captain Fanplastic Plastic Pirate Module has reached over 500 learners, instilling environmental empathy and distributing literacy materials that help children see plastic in a whole new light. Not as waste, but as treasure that needs to be handled wisely.
So far, learners have removed more than 50 kilograms of litter from their schools through creative clean-up activities and gamified “treasure hunts.” With each session, they’ve grown into confident, informed eco-citizens, ready to take their knowledge home and into the future.
Even our final (rainy!) session couldn’t dampen spirits. Instead of heading outdoors, learners created posters to share what they’d learned, all while enjoying a surprise visit from Ollie the Octopus, the programme’s much-loved mascot.
Although the Captain Fanplastic classroom sessions have come to an end, the programme is far from over for participating schools. The interschool competition remains active until the end of the year, encouraging learners to continue collecting clean, recyclable plastic.
Thanks to the support of Henque Waste, schools are rewarded with cash for every kilogram of plastic collected. A great incentive that helps fund school initiatives while reinforcing the importance of recycling. At the end of the competition, we want to ensure that the top school will win a special prize, making every bottle, wrapper, and effort count. This ongoing activity ensures the lessons of environmental responsibility continue well beyond the classroom.
A special thank you to the Rotary Club of Mossel Bay and Garden Route Casino Trust for their incredible sponsorship of the 2025 programme.
What’s Next?
The interschool competition continues until the end of the year, and we’re on the lookout for:
✅ Sponsors to help bring this programme to more schools in 2026
✅ A grand prize sponsor to reward the winning school (or up to 100 of its learners) with something memorable
If your organisation believes in youth empowerment, environmental education, and real impact, we’d love to work with you.
