PRESERVE AND CHERISH THE “PALE BLUE DOT”

The only home we have ever known.

Save wildlife and it promotes health ecosystems, like this reef with hundreds of blue tang fish.

Our Story

EARTH LEGACY FOUNDATION – SAVING OUR PLANET, AND THE CREATURES LIVING IN IT, TO PRESERVE OUR FUTURE

“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives… it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” Carl Sagan, 1994

Our Legacy

Save Wildlife

Through our efforts to understand the harvesting of endangered wildlife, we realised that in order to protect and save wildlife, we must offer an alternative source of sustenance and income. We are working with communities to establish several skills development projects, aquaculture farms, and building tourism, to create sustainable job opportunities.

Carpentry Workshops

Alongside our FSC-registered partners, LevasFlor, our goal for the project is to create a facility that can process responsibly harvested wood and train locals in carpentry skills. Apprentices will be identified from the communities and we will sell or export manufactured products, keeping the profits in Mozambique, to the benefit of the local population.

Apprentices will be trained in every aspect of the ceramic process, from identifying and mining local materials, to processing and creating functional works of art. Aqua Farming

Turtles are seen by locals as a source of protein. Through our efforts to understand the residents’ harvesting of turtles, we realised that to protect wildlife, communities need alternative means of sustenance. Tilapia fish farms can provide locals with a reliable source of nutritional fish and an opportunity to sell fish at local markets, creating…

Turtle Monitoring

The turtle monitors ensure the protection of nesting turtles on Ilha do Fogo, keeping an eye on the nests until the hatchlings emerge. The project aims to identify individuals from the local community who show an aptitude for turtle and marine protection and fund their formal training with Maputo National Park.

Sundome Project

Our purpose-built solar stills can produce over 20 litres of fresh water per day, per still utilising seawater or grey water. We use these stills to ensure freshwater on Ilha do Fogo, however, funding is required to develop more solar stills for the coastal communities, providing fresh drinking water for families in the area.

Keep Fin Alive

We partner with Keep Fin Alive, a marine conservation and education campaign in Mossel Bay, South Africa, which is home to our head office. Their mission is to spread awareness of the catastrophic decline in marine populations due to plastic pollution, overfishing and other threats.
