Turtle Monitoring

Turtle Monitoring

Turning Poachers into Protectors

In Maputo National Park, local community members have been trained to monitor and protect nesting turtles, turning former poachers into conservation allies. By shifting the value of turtles from food sources to eco-tourism assets, this initiative has not only helped safeguard marine life but also created jobs and sustainable income opportunities for locals.

While formal training for turtle monitors is currently on hold due to funding constraints, we continue to identify passionate individuals in Zambezia Province who show an aptitude for marine conservation. These individuals may have future opportunities to gain hands-on experience in turtle monitoring, tagging, and data collection with conservation partners when resources allow.
