Educating the Next Generation for a Waste-Free Future
Captain Fanplastic is an innovative environmental education programme designed to inspire young learners to see waste differently and take action against plastic pollution. Through storytelling, hands-on learning, and community engagement, the initiative empowers children to become “Plastic Pirates,” transforming discarded plastic into valuable resources while promoting sustainable waste management habits.

Mission
Captain Fanplastic’s mission is to turn 1 million learners into Plastic Pirates by 2030, contributing directly to global sustainability efforts. Recognised as a UN Ocean Decade Action and a World Economic Forum Top Innovator, the programme aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 4, 12, 13, & 14), focusing on environmental education, responsible consumption, climate action, and marine conservation.
How It Works
The Plastic Pirate Module introduces learners to Captain Fanplastic’s world, using:
- Interactive storytelling to engage young minds in sustainability.
- Treasure hunts that encourage plastic cleanup activities.
- Repurposing waste to reinforce the concept of the circular economy.
- Community partnerships to create long-term impact beyond the classroom.

Bringing the Programme to Mossel Bay
Thanks to a partnership between Oceans Research, Earth Legacy Foundation, and Mossel Bay Municipality, and funding from Rotary Club of Mossel Bay and Garden Route Casino Trust, Captain Fanplastic is now empowering primary school students in under-resourced areas with essential environmental literacy skills.
An exciting feature of the programme in Mossel Bay is the collaboration with Henque Waste, which will buy back selected plastic items collected by learners. This initiative directly benefits participating schools, reinforcing the economic value of recycling while encouraging sustainable habits in the community.
Why It Matters
Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, with millions of tons of waste ending up in our oceans each year. By educating and empowering young learners, Captain Fanplastic is creating a generation that understands the value of responsible waste management and actively works towards a cleaner future.
Impact In Mossel Bay So Far…
322 learners with environmental empathy
40+ kg of litter removed
345 literacy materials distributed
